There are many names for the time-space anomaly your character has found themselves in. The Cleft of Dimensions, the Bend of Time, Angelus Errare, "Where angels lose their way". But whatever you choose to call it, if you choose to call it anything at all, one thing is for certain that you are well beyond your world, or even your understanding of what a world is.
Angelus Errare is something beyond space and time, and the laws that regulate those things. Everything feels like an impressionist painting, or a bad drug trip, at least at first. It doesn't take long for it all to start making sense, though... Maybe that's a worrisome statement. Who knows, right?
Angelus Errare is literally a 'cleft' of dimensions or worlds. It exists in the place between all realities. In a literal sense, it takes the form of an island in a vast ocean. The ocean cannot be traversed, as swimming long enough in any direction will eventually lead you back to the island. The island itself seems to shift in nature at random, but it does seem to have a default state that, yes, resembles an impressionist-surrealist painting. It's colorful an weird and you're never sure what's up or down. You're not alone, but it's hard to qualify the shade-like impressions of sentience as 'people'.
You can visit the setting page for a more detailed answer to all of this.
No one knows. And that's not some tilde covered hint at some deep conspiracy. Literally no one knows. The shadows don't know, the island doesn't know, and for the most part none of your fellow castaways know either. If there is some greater reason as to why yourself and others have been pulled to this bizarre world-between-worlds, it's definitely beyond anyone's comprehension at the moment.
But you're more than welcome to speculate. Who knows? Maybe the answer is out there. But it's going to require more than your typical mystery solving skills to figure out. After all, this place doesn't operate on normal rules.
Where are we going to live?
If you saw the settings page, you'd know that the ever present Great Treehouse is the main supporter of non-shade life. It's absolutely massive, and easily visible from most places on the island. It almost seems designed to be livable, rather than a space people cultivated into being livable.
That being said, the fruit and water are indeed products of this weird, weird world. Occasionally, they will alter reality just like the island does, but rather than large scale, they will simply do so for whoever eats or drinks them, and only on an individual basis. Not every person who eats or drinks of the tree's bounty will be affected, either.
If it wasn't obvious already, this place is weird. Super weird. And as said before, it doesn't operate on normal rules. Quite regularly, the entire nature of the island, even the uncertain dimensions in which it occupies, can change completely without warning. The island can shift into an entirely different world, or its already unusual weather can become even more unusual, or the residents of the island can be transformed or altered in some way.
Causality is just a vague suggestion at best and surrealism is always on the menu. The only thing for sure about Angelus Errare is nothing is for sure.
So how do we communicate with other characters?
You mean aside from just walking up to someone and talking to them, you big idiot? Well if you mean a traditional "network", there really is none, at least in the sense of tradition. Whatever means of non-personal communication you used in your world prior to arriving in Angelus Errare can functionally be used to communicate with other characters in the cleft. This means magic books, smartphones, old land lines, carrier pigeons, all of them are internetworked by nature of just existing within Angelus Errare.
"Hacking", or being able to read people's private messages and the like, isn't really allowed since this is not a traditional network. If you have a question about possible exceptions to this, feel free to ask.
Of course this does not mean you are limited, by any means, to what might be in your world. If you want to pick up a smartphone that washed ashore and try to learn it, by all means, give it a go. Technology barriers are not really a thing.
Language barriers aren't either, at least at first. While characters arrive with some bizarre cognitive ability to understand their fellow castaways, this is not guaranteed to be a constant thing. Events might alter this in any given way. Hope you've got some translators handy, just in case.
So items wash ashore, too?
Item Tides. Clothing, objects, all kinds of stuff winds up on the beaches of Angelus Errare. This is a good thing, since there isn't much to that effect on the island itself, and nowhere in the cleft does there seem to be any kind of means of manufacturing items unless you decide to build one yourself.
However, item tides aren't very common, and only seem to happen once every month or so, which is about the same time characters wash in. To apply for an item to show up in the item tide, please use this page
What happens if we die here?
While we certainly hope your first instinct upon arriving on the island isn't to go on a tone-deaf murder spree, it is definitely possible to die within this strange world. The world may be incorporeal, but you still very much are, and are probably mortal to boot. The island hasn't changed that. So that begs the question, should you die for any reason, what happens?
Castaways who die usually remain dead for about a week, give or take, but eventually they wash back up on shore, and their cadaver (assuming there is one) is no longer able to be found. But something... isn't right. Their memories are fuzzy, particularly with regards to their lives back home. They may forget things, even important things, or at least know there's something they should remember but can't clearly recall. This is not a permanent effect, it will last a few months at least, but it can be highly disorienting. We don't recommend it.
What kind of game is this?
Angelus Errare is a sort of throwback to games that used to be much more frequent in LJ/DWRP. The game has a sort of relaxed surrealism to it, rather than focusing too deeply on a slow, overarching plot. While there is a metaplot, and several possible endgames based on how players drive the game, the basic premise is still weird randomness, aka crackRP.
Which isn't to say it will always be wacky. Events can shift the tone of the game in various directions, at least temporarily. Events will range from surreal to oldschool cracky to even mildly horrific (though never outright horror, at least as we think of it in DWRP terms). Monthly big events will be cycled through regularly, and sometimes the world itself will change to reflect existing canons represented in the game's cast. The tree's fruit and water, on the other hand, will offer up small personal events for players to work with. The pace of the game will be adjusted as we go along.
Day/Night and time ratio.
Ostensibly, Angelus Errare operates on a mostly 1:1 time ratio to OOC time. That doesn't mean the day/night or seasonal cycles matter at all. But, generally, sun goes up and sun goes down like it would in a normal world. We'll let players know well in advance if this changes.
This is also answered in the rules section, but it's worth putting in more than one place:
Activity checks will be posted and cleared every month before reserves open. Activity requirements will be TWO (2) links. They can include a post, a log (assuming that log is largely prose style), or a thread that includes at least 10 comments from your character (assuming that thread is a bracketed style). In other words, at least 20 comments per month. There must always be two links and they must fit these requirements or else that character will not pass AC and will be removed from the game.
Posts or logs where none of the comments were responded to are not allowed to be used for AC. They must still meet the 10 comment requirement.
We do not accept retroactive hiatuses. If you do not have enough links for AC, talk to a mod and we may make an exception. For instance, if you only have one link in April, we may allow you to stay in the game so long as you give us 3 links in May. Exceptions will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
Mods reserve the right to speak with a player if they continuously only make minimum activity or are continuously late to turn in their activity requirements. We can discuss what might improve their experience and make them more active. This does not mean you are breaking any rules, you are not being punished if we speak to you, we just wanna know what's up. If you have a reasonable circumstance (job, school, real life in general), that's perfectly fine. We don't need the details, we just wanna know what's going on and if there's something we can do on our end to make things better.
Given the nature of the game, there is no logical not to allow AUs and CRAUS, so those are on the table. HOWEVER, these are accepted on a case by case basis, and just because we allow AUs doesn't mean you're allowed to make a virtual OC and slap a canon character's face on it. These apps will be judged with a little more scrutiny, so please put some thouht into your AU/CRAU!
OCs are also allowed, as well as "Canon OCs". This game defines "Canon OCs" characters that exist in canon, but are not fleshed out in any meaningful way, therefore forcing the player to fill in a lot of large blanks. But just like with AUs, Canon OCs are given a bit more scrutiny in the app process. Please make sure your app for a Canon OC properly fits into your canon! Give it as much thought and depth as you would a pure OC.
Beyond that, the door is wide open. However, you may only app two characters per app cycle. And you may only app two characters per canon, and mods reserve the right to disallow you playing characters who are closely related/obligated to interact in some way. The current character limit per layer is five, but we strongly recommend you only have two or three at most. Mods reserve the right to decline apps from players we think may not be able to handle a large character load.
Powers, Items, and their limits
Characters with powers and specialized personal items are allowed to app in with those powers/items. However, there are limits to this.
For powers, we ask that anything truly potentially game-breaking be non-functional within the game. This includes characters with their OWN reality warping abilities, or planet destroying strength, or anything of the "phenomenal cosmic power" variety.
For items, giant space robots will probably wash ashore, but be vastly limited in their functionality. Same with space ships or any other large craft. Weapons fall under the same umbrella powers do, in which if it's a game-breaking macguffin, we ask you leave it at home.
If you're unsure, just ask us! But remember, mods reserve the right to send revision notices to any apps we feel are not checking their powers/items prudently.
Play in Angelus Errare is divided into two main communities, with another comm for OOC (out of character) communication between players, and another for memes and the like.
angeluserrare This is the main comm, where network posts are made. Action threads are allowed here, but if that is all you plan to do we suggest you take it to...
angeluslogs Our log comm, for interpersonal interactions between characters that are independent of the IC network.
angelusooc Our OOC comm, for posting of intros, hiatuses, drop notices, and all mod announcements, including for plotting and events. Keeping an eye on this comm is essential, so please do so.
bendoftime Our meme comm, where you post non-game-canon events and the like. You can lift them straight off of bakerstreet for all we care, have fun, go nuts. This is also where our Test Drive is posted every cycle.
The graphics used in most of our pages were coded by Cat/ sekishi. Our banner art was provided, with permission, by Spicyroll via Deviantart.

Does the phoenix have any noted magical properties and whatnot? Basically the kind of stuff you'd wanna detail in the powers/abilities section of the app.

WELL basically, just detail it in the app, and we'll probably be okay with it.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-26 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)How does one get into them? Is there some kind of elevator, a stairwell, or a rope ladder of some sort?
The reason I ask is because I'm considering playing a character with a physical disability, and I'm trying to figure out how they'll get in and out of their home on their own.

Basically we want characters to be able to feel like they can have an impact on their environment in some way, and the Tree is the best place to do so.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-26 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)My character would definitely need someone else's help getting up in to the tree houses at first, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Forced CR can be interesting.
Thanks, mods!
